On this May 8, 2017, a holiday commemorating the armistice of 1945, will take place the traditional ceremony. First of all, the President of the Republic, perhaps accompanied, but not yet known, by the incoming President elected the day before, will ascend Avenue des Champs Elysees escorted by the Republican Guard to Place de l’Etoile. He will then lay a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier under the Arc de Triomphe and then in front of the statue of General de Gaulle, Place Clémenceau in the 8th arrondissement.
Many places will be closed for the occasion to the public, for example the Place de l’Etoile will be closed since the evening before.
Here is a small selection of places opened on May 8, 2017:
- The Louvre Museum, is just a 5-minute walk from Hotel des 2 Continents. The exhibition Vermeer and the masters of genre painting is to be discovered until May 22, remember to book before! Opening hours: 9:00 am-6:00 pm.
- The Conciergerie and the Sainte-Chapelle will also open their doors this Monday. On the Ile de la Cité, those two monuments are pure jewels. Respectively house of kings and chapel ordered by Saint-Louis, they recall a monarchy whose megalomania initiated the most beautiful achievements. Did you know that the Sainte-Chapelle alone had cost half the annual budget of the state at that time? Its majesty is more fully understood. Little advice: go there during the day to enjoy the light in stained glass, magic! Opening hours: Conciergerie: 9:30 am – 6:00 pm and Sainte-Chapelle: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

May 8, 2017 in Paris: Louis Vuitton Foundation. Ceremonies and places opened on holiday The Pantheon, from the top of its Sainte-Genevieve mountain, is as imposing as poetic. An eternal home of great men and women, it houses a gigantic pendulum as well as models of the different stages of its realization. Visiting hours: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.
- The Louis Vuitton Foundation, whose edifice alone is appreciated, hosts within its walls the exhibition Art / Africa. Visiting hours: 11:00 am – 8:00 pm.
- The Grand Palais, which was created for the Universal Exhibition in 1900, proposes the splendid exhibition Rodin, the centennial exhibition. Tip: do not forget to look up when you arrive in front of the Grand Palais, you never get tired of the view! Opening hours: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
Other places will be opened such as the Eiffel Tower, Pompidou Center or the Château de Versailles, but be sure to check opening hours because it may change on holiday.
